About
Alex studied classical piano as a teenager for a few years, and taught himself jazz throughout his 20's, until he was ready to go full-time professional.
Since then, he has worked on cruise ships
Holland America Lines MS Rotterdam,
Brittany Ferries, flown out to
Doha, Qatar for an event, played in many of London's top wedding venues, such as the
Waldorf in Aldwych,
Royal Opera House in Covent Garden,
Institute of Directors on Pall Mall as well as playing at private functions in peoples' suburban houses for birthday parties, valentines surprises and proposals, and of course, countless weddings. He has even worked with top professional clowns :
The Popcorn Club at
Rich Mix, Bethnal Green.
Pianists who have influenced Alex include
Art Tatum,
Thelonius Monk,
Bill Evans,
Herbie Hancock and others. He plays mainly jazz standards but also has a small repertoire of more familiar tunes (see
repertoire page) and can play four classical pieces. It's not all about
jazz - "there's only two types of music: good and bad".
Alex was responsible for
hiring jazz duos at
Shezan Restaurant in
Knightsbridge for three and a half years up until a few years ago. He also plays solo piano and putting on private events, both solo and jazz duos at various exclusive venues around London.
If he's not out performing, then he's either at home practicing or out at one of London's many
jazz jam sessions!
Alex uses a
Yamaha P-95 keyboard, which has built-in speakers, and can bring a
Roland Cube amp if he needs to be louder or play with a drummer in the band.
